Abstract
Comparison of ultrasound assesment and histopathology of the endometrium was made in 54 women. Of these, 32 women were postmenopause and 22 were premenopause.
Before endometrial sampling, transvaginal ultrasonographic examination was performed. Twenty one patients demonstrated endometrial thickness¡Â5mm on transvaginal sonogram, and all of these patient had minimal tissue obtained on biopsy and a
pathologic
report of "tissue insufficient for diagnosis".
33 patients had an echogenic endometrium¡Ã5mm. Pathology reports of their samples revealed tissue insufficient for diagnosis (five), proliferative endometrium (five), secretory endometrium (two), pyometra (one). Polyp (three), endometrial
hyperplasia
(eleven), and endometrial cancer (six cases). If the cutoff limit for endometrial abnormality was 5 mm the negative predictive value 100%, sensitivity 100%, specificity 64%.
In this study, the mean thickness of endometrium was 22.16¡¾2.79 mm in endometrial cancer, 12.36¡¾2.67 mm in endometrial hyperplasia, 11.67¡¾2.62 mm in endometrial polyp, 13 mm in pyometra, 7.4¡¾1.85 mm in proliferative phase, 9¡¾1 mm in
secretory
phase
and 4.15¡¾1.43 mm in atrophic endometrium.
